May 21st, 2020 OBOB Book List

Hello!! It's OBOB Time!

If you will be in grades 3rd through 8th next year, you will be able to participate in OBOB! OBOB, or Oregon Battle of the Books is a statewide reading and quiz competition. It is completely optional, you do not have to do it, but if you like to read, hang out with your friends, and discover new books, then OBOB might be for you!

Each year students, teachers, and librarians across the state choose 16 books for each grade band division- 3rd-5th, 6th-8th, and High School. These books represent the best in diverse literature from recent years with a focus on Northwest authors. Even if you don't want to participate in the program, the book list is a wonderful place to find new books at your reading level.

There are a number of books on this list that I am very excited about, including the new book from local author and friend of Sauvie Island School, Rosanne Parry. One of my all time favorite graphic novels, El Deafo by CeCe Bell is on the 3rd-5th grade list this year, as well as a hysterical book about telekinetic chickens and a really interesting book that tells stories what famous authors were like when they were children.

The 6th-8th grade list is full of adventure and diverse stories. With books from a number of cultural perspectives, these books tackle the ups and downs of middle schoolers, mixed in with social justice, racism, and common family issues. One of my favorites from last year is on the list, The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl by Stacey McAnulty. It's the story of a girl who is hit by lightning and becomes a math genius, with a side of social anxiety, making her dreams of being "normal" and going to college seemingly out of reach. I'm really looking forward to reading Amal Unbound by Aisha Saeed. This one is set in modern day Pakistan and follows the journey of a clever, ambitious young girl who ends up having to work as a servant in the home of a local crook. I've never read anything like it before, so I'm excited for the new experience.

For more information on the books, please watch my book review videos below. You can also download PDF bookmarks with the OBOB lists or a document with descriptions of each book for 2020-2021 below. These titles can be found at your local library, online, and at our library when school opens back up.
