June 2nd, 2020 - The Day You Begin

The Day You Begin

Today I'd like to share with you one of my favorite read a louds. You may remember it from the library. It's called The Day You Begin. It is written by by Jacqueline Woodson and illustrated by Rafael López. It's a very sweet and beautifully illustrated book about something we all know well: feeling a little different. I really love how Ms. Linda reads the book, and you can get a good look at the lovely, colorful paintings.

Have you ever gone somewhere that no one knows you? Met a new friend who was much different from you? How did it feel? What did you do?

Look below the video link for discussion questions!

After you watch the video, pick a question or 2 from below and talk to your grownup about it!!

  • Pick a child in the story. Why do they feel like they don't fit in?
  • Share a time when you went somewhere and felt like no one there was quite like you. What happened?
  • Why does the girl on the cover think her stories aren't as great as her classmates?
  • How does the girl say we have to overcome our fear of being different?
  • Think about the children in the story who feel like they don't belong. If one of your classmates was feeling that way, what could you do to help them?
